Eco-Bos

Eco-Bos is the new name for the company formed by Orascom and joint venture partners Imerys Minerals and the Eden Project to develop an eco-town in St Austell, Cornwall. Clever these marketing people - Eco-Bos was chosen as it uses both the project's sustainable credentials and the Celtic or Cornish word for home!

The plans for the new development are currently doing the rounds of the local area in the form of a road show. The first detailed images were unveiled to the public in St Austell on 25th March at the start of a three-day exhibition  and public consultation aimed at encouraging  the local community to be involved in the planning.

Local press reported the initial exhibition  but for such a massive development which will have a huge impact on St Austell and surrounding villages there seems remarkably little opposition. Concerns have been raised about the road infrastructure, the merging of local communities into one and the belief that job opportunities will not necessarily follow but all in all it seems that the developers are actually working with and listening to the local community.  Maybe the main difference is that this series of developments will be on brownfield sites already owned by Imerys Minerals.

  1. Listening to local people, building on Brownfield sites - how novel. Could be a winner

  2. They won't listen to local people. It's all a con. How very environmentally friendly, turning a disused clay tip that's naturally regenerated itself over the past 20 plus years into a new town for non-locals to benefit. Cable car from Baal Pit to Eden, someone please justify it's need please?

  3. as a local resident, appreciating that Mid-Cornwall's fragile economy is in need of investment on such a major scale, i welcome the scheme! there is bound to be some scepticism, but let's look at the positives here - this is a huge uplift for the area, the people and their economy

  5. Well, the need for a cable car...

Perhaps to connect Par Harbour, Eden and the new Development a Baal/West Carclaze to St Austell Train Station.

Surely anyone can see that they are 'trying' to take cars off the road, and to give locals and tourists a convienient transport alternative.

I live in St Austell. I welcome the Eco town, however, I hope there are some limits to how many people from outside cornwall can move here. We need to strengthen our Identity here in Cornwall, and doing something like 'selling a large chunk off to a Birmingham Housing Association' wouldn't be very helpful.

50% minimum affordable local housing is a must. Imerys own the land, which is practicaly worthless without the Eco town permission. Its almost money for old rope!

I have read on Imerys website that they plan to create roughly 1 new job per house built. That is fantastic, lets hope it actually happens. Despite the green credentials, the amazing landscape , scenery and views, and the unique way of life in Cornwall, without some form of financial incentive, are any big companies really going to move here?
