Stop Norwich Urbanisation hand over petition to Keith Simpson

Stephen Heard, Chairman of Stop Norwich Urbanisation met local Broadland MP, Keith Simpson in London yesterday to hand over a petition with more than 3,200 signatures from local residents opposed to the inappropriate development proposed of the NE Norwich Growth Triangle.

This development and the road infrastructure proposed would particularly affect the villages of Rackheath, Salhouse, Thorpe End and Little and Great Plumstead and it was the residents of these villages who were particularly keen to sign the petition to get their objections recorded and brought to the attention of the government and the wider public.

An independent television company, Spectacle TV was keen to cover the event and filmed Stephen Heard interviewing Keith Simpson and then filmed a separate interview with Stephen himself.

It is important that local residents get their views known as Broadland District Council have resolutely chosen to ignore the objections of the local community. We hope Keith Simpson will now speak on behalf of the community and make our objections known to ministers. Surely this is what the Big Society is all about and the government now has a chance to prove that they are listening to what local people say and to act accordingly. Otherwise they will be no better than Broadland District Council and the Greater Norwich Development Partnership who merely pay lip service to consultation when in reality they just plough ahead with what they want to do.

  1. Phew! 3,200 signatures. The residents of Coltishall only mustered 300 and that was judged enough to stop the ECO town. We must be listened to. How can they say there is no opposition?

Surely BDC must start taking notice of the residents now? They are already trying to mislead Rackheath residents into thinking the Exemplar is all the housing there is to be. The Eco town has not gone away and neither has the NDR. Despite it losing it's funding, NCC are planning to waste even more of our money competing with 21 other road schemes for a pot of £600m. They have already wasted £10m on it. How much more?

  3. Rackheath Villager.

Lets hope that someone please listens to us the people of Rackheath as this is going to have a huge impact on a small rural community. However, I am being practical when I say that come what may Broadland District Council have absolutely no intention of listening to our views and I find this blatent disregard as a Insult and dispicable behaviour by them. Unfortunately I can't but help wondering what is in it for Simon Woodbridge and his cronies....Money I fear its a disgrace.

  6. Well done SNUB. Perhaps Broadland Council will now listen to their electorate at last. They keep saying they will not proceed if the local community is against it. Well now we will see if they support us OR their developer friends. Why was this not reported in the EDP ?

  7. Great news and our thanks to SNUB, the local community group, for getting our message across.
Will Broadland listen at last and what will our MP do with this huge petition ?

  8. Thank goodness SNUB has taken our petition forward. Hope our MP will now lobby the Ministers hard to ensure that the views of the local Community are listened to. What did Eric Pickles say "The Ecotown will not go ahead unless supported by the local community"

  10. Has the local press been informed about the meeting and the petition.? If so,surely they should have written a piece about such a contentious issue. If they saw fit not to,you have to wonder why not!!
Never the less Well done SNUB,keep up the good work.

  11. You might like to know that the EDP had the photos and the story on Monday afternoon. They have chosen not to publish it.
Why? I guess the editor is weak or maybe the proprietor or friends have vested interests. Whatever the case they are obviously in favour of building the third largest town in Norfolk between Sprowston and Wroxham.
10,000 houses is 24,000 residents and that is the same size as Thetford.
Only when you realise this can you appreciate how much employment has to be provided and what the extent of the associated services is going to be. Otherwise and maybe, in any case the the same problems they face in Thetford will be experienced in NE Norwich.

If you want to know whats going on come here.

  12. Would it be appropriate to present a copy of the petition of 3200 signatures to the planning inspectors who are conducting the JCS examination? How very dissappointing that the EDP saw fit not to publish the meeting with Keith Simpson,I would have thought they would have considered the matter of great public interest and concern and it should have been given local publicity by them. No doubt they have their reasons for not doing so,may be they would like to tell us.
