ECO TOWN MINISTER SAYS “LOSING YOUR HOUSE MAY BE A GOOD THING” - SNUB response

Housing Minister John Healey, who is the Minister responsible for the decision on the proposed Eco Town at Rackheath, told thousands of people who face losing their homes it might be the “best” thing for them.

Healey’s remarks came as repossessions in England hit a 14 year high. About 46,000 people lost their homes last year – up 15% on 2008.

Healey said: “In some cases, it is the best thing for people who are struggling with their mortgage. Sometimes it is impossible for people to maintain the mortgage commitment they have. It may be the best thing in those circumstances.”

However his advice may ring hollow as during the expenses scandal it was revealed that Healey made an £88,000 profit on a London flat subsidised by the taxpayer for at least five years. He also claimed £1,317 to replace a door, and over claimed more than £2,000 in mortgage interest.

SNUB Chairman Stephen Heard says “This comment is typical of the nonsense that politicians proclaim. In making this statement he is ignoring the suffering of thousands of people who lose their homes whilst he is happy to walk away with enough profit from the taxpayer to buy a terraced house in some areas and certainly enough to buy a flat here in Norfolk. This is the man who will be making key housing decisions that will effect thousands of local people here in Norfolk; an area he has never even visited!”
